Some Words - On Art

3 Finger Blues

I found this character tucked away in a folder on my laptop, and couldn't remember if I posted him, so please forgive me if this is a re-run. This is just me playing around with some line-work, on a sketch Chuck Gammage did of me, as bluesman. Also a little color to look nice for the blog. Still trying to track down the original sketch Chuck made, and will post as soon as I find it.
I should mention that this was mostly inspired by listening to Blind Willie McTell - The Last Session, and if you get a chance check out some of these links where you can listen to some clips, and learn why Bob Dylan, Kurt Cobain, and Jack White were all inspired by Blind Willie.

While working on the Dark Years project at Chuck Gammage Animation, I have really started to appreciate the early rubber-hose style animation, from the 30's and 40's. It is amazing the animation they could do then, with limited technology . Simple basic things that they were drawing, yes drawing! back then, that we have somehow evolved into a complicated and sterile process by using computers (more on that, and a perfect example over at Cartoon Brew).
Anyway here is a Betty Boop cartoon, and although it contains questionable material, is a very good example of what talented artists can draw.

Ryan Larkin 1943-2007

On a sad note Ryan Larkin passed away on on February 14th. Larkin was best known for his creative animation techniques and his oscar nominated NFB film, Walking.
In recent years most he is most notably known for being the subject of Academy Award winning short "Ryan", by Chris Landreth. As a child I watched many of his films without knowing it, and it wasn't until I was in my first year of animation, when seeing the short film Walking that I connected the artist with his work, and I was fully inspired.

I have posted a few items here including the news report on his passing, a link to the Wikipedia site on Larkin, and two of his films, Walking and Syrinx.

I found this really exciting artist site over on the Cartoon Brew blog. Bernard Haux has a series of demo videos on his website, about different rigs and transformers for 3D animation, that increase the cartoony action with 3D characters, enabling more wave action, and squash and stretch. Very neat stuff allowing for more 2D style cartooniness in 3D.

Cartoon Modern

I have been wanting to mention for some time a relatively new book that has been released on the animation styles of the 1950's, Cartoon Modern, by Amid Amidi. It seems like there are relatively few books on the art of animation, and almost no books available on the art form outside of major studios, like Walt Disney, and Dreamworks. So when a book like this is created it is quite a big deal. Being a big fan of the simple stylized animation from that time period, a book like this is pure gold, featuring lots and lots of artwork, a studio by studio breakdown of work and artists, and a nice overall history of the animation industry of the time period.
Definitely a must have for any animation professional, and highly reccommended for anyone who loves cartoons.

Nightmare in 3D !

Until I get some more artwork scanned in I would like to tell everyone, or remind some of you, about the re-release of Tim Burton's, A Nightmare Before Christmas, in 3D!

Yes, although not originally filmed in 3D, the folks over at Walt Disney, have made a 3D version of this film which will be hitting IMAX theatres on October 2oth. Apparently you even get to keep the glasses, NEATO!

During filming of Nightmare, animator Joel Fletcher decided to take some 3D stereo photographs or the animation setups. You can check out some the photos HERE

To accompany the 3D release, Disney is also releasing a 2 CD set with original music, as well as cover versions of the Danny Elfman songs, by artists such as, Marilyn Manson, Fiona Apple and Panic! At The Disco. You can read more about the album HERE, and listen to some of the songs on the MYSPACE page.

Hey in case you haven't seen the Gruesomestein Monsters, you now can see all the wonderful and funny episodes over on their blog. Special thanks to some annonymous guy who posted them to YOUTUBE so that the world could finally see them, (otherwise they might be locked away in the Nelvana vaults FOREVER!) and enjoy the art of the funny. The series was created by two really swell guys, Riccardo Durante and Mark Ackland. The characters are really funny and the art is super cool, Hats Off to Monsters!

This past Tuesday we attended the screening of Bruno Bozetto's Allegro Non Troppo, at Innes Hall . After the screening The Italian Cultural Institute, and T.A.I.S. had arranged a meet and greet with the director at a local bar. So I had a chance to shake Mr. Bozetto's hand, and tell him how much I enjoyed his work, especially Signor Rossi. To which he responded by adding a little drawing of Signor Rossi, and his autograph to the back of my program.

One of the showcases at the Ottawa Animation Festival was a screening of the work of Bruno Bozzetto. One of his most Famous characters is Signor Rossi, (pictured above) but he also directed the feature film Allegro Non Troppo.
Allegro non troppo, is a full length animated film along the lines of Fantasia. Short stories put together with a classical score. To read more about this film click HERE.

Iwanted to write about Bruno because tonight (Sept 26th), the Toronto Animated Image Society (or T.A.I.S.) will be having a screening of Allegro Non Troppo, followed by a screening of a sellection of Bruno's short film work, tomorrow evening.

Of special interest at the Ottawa Animation Festival is the Bob Clampett retrospective .
A history of his career and a screening of some of his most popular cartoons.

So because of a hectic schedule, with my school work, work-work, and getting ready to go to Ottawa, I won't have much to post until early next week.

Quite a lot has been happening with the little show I have been collaborating on with Chuck Gammage. The few character designs I have posted below are only a taste of what is to come, which is looking to be a very fun, and exciting show.
On another note tomorrow is graduation day for me, as I have just completed my Self Employment Business Program,(also known as S.E.B.) at the Toronto Business Development Center. If you would like to know about this program you can click HERE. I would recommend this course to anyone looking to make the dream of running your own business a reality. So far I have learned so much thanks to the many friendly and helpful people at T.B.D.C.

Keep on bloggin is what I am trying to do, but sometimes it gets tough when all of my drawing time is spent on images I can't post yet, because of top secret things, and not neccessarily MY top secret things. Some artwork just need to be cleared before the public can see them.
I have an extremely busy week coming up, with my school work and getting ready for the Ottawa Animation Festival (more on that to come), but I wanted to keep to my new regular schedule and post some drawings while I have the chance. These cats are not exactly new to me, but a fun drawing to work on. Unfortunately I can't find the scan of the orginal drawing by Chuck Gammage. Anyway, here is the finished line drawing I came up with, and my very first attempt at coloring these cats. Will repost a much better version later in the week.

Since some of you liked the other elves so much I asked Chuck if i could post a few more, and voila here they are in the three different stages. Just like the last elves these designs were also not chosen, but still fun designs. The initial rough was drawn by Chuck Gammage, the final line drawing, and ink and paint was finished by myself.

A long time ago, (what seems like a lifetime away) I graduated from the Classical Animation Program, at Sheridan College, in Oakville. My graduating class included many, many talented people, and I just wanted to point out that I have been compiling a list of all the classmates from my year, in my links section on the right. I also wanted to mention that this weekend is Fan Expo at the Toronto Convention Center. One of the artists to be appearing is Blair Kitchen, who is debuting his very first comic "The Possum", a fantastic 72 pages of goodness. Hats off to Blair for his hard work and dedication, and congratulations on making such a sweet looking debut issue!

New stuff ! Well more doodles and scribbles, and no new finished niceties, but new content nontheless. I find I have so many new ideas popping into my head, that the only way I can make room for anything new is to clean house. So many of these like I said were done in a minute or so when I was on break or bored during class. Like I said nothing finished or nailed down but just ideas.

I made an earlier post with some rough drawings of 4 fish , well here is the actual fish that was chosen for the show .The main characters ( two cockroaches ) get flushed into the sewer ,so they needed some fish designed to inhabit the sewer . Ultimately the scary fish won out .

I thought I should make a post here and there about some of the people and places that I have worked for / with , in this case Chuck Gammage Animation . At first I was going to add links to all of the talented people , from the studio , to my site , but thought it would just be easier to give you the info on where to find the studio site , and a link to their blog , where you can find links to all the individual artists as well . I have recently posted a bunch of book illustrations on the Flickr site , as a contribution to the Vintage Children's Book group , as a way of sharing some of the fabulous art I have been collecting over the years .

Wow , here is a blast from the past . I found a couple of drawings from a Public Service Announcement that I worked on a long time ago at Redrover studios . The spot raises awareness about eating disorders in children . Directing animator was Morgan Ginsberg , animators Greg Court and Jens Pindl . Lots of fun to work on something so high quality and for a good cause . Especially like the old time cartoon look achieved in the designs and in compositing by Brad Husband . A nice surprise to find some of the work from this project I had a chance to work on , at Unplugged Studio . They were hired to produce an animated video for Rush's new tour , that would play during the duration of one of their songs . So a friend of mine Joe Milkshake , called me up to help out . The first picture is a scan of the original designs that Joe Milkshake provided me with to get started .
The second one is a still from the Alex Dog animation to give you an idea of what the design looked like cleaned up and coloured .

Here are some more characters from the "Happy Hour " short film idea , and also a monkey .

The film features a character that bears a close resemblance to an old co-worker , who I like to refer to as "Drinky Buddy", and another Telly Savalas type character who started off as the "Foreigner " with a beret and a stereotypical black and white striped shirt . The clean drawings here I am sure I have a version somewhere , that was enhanced on the computer in illustrator , , as a test ,with beautiful ,crisp ,clean ,computery lines .

Sometimes being busy with work is a good thing , then there is such a thing as being too busy . This is a collection of early character sketches I was working on , way back when I first started working as a freelance artist . I have finally come back to this and happy to say it will be back on the drawing board really soon. The idea here was to work these up to use in a short film about a couple of guys drinking in a bar , talking to women and getting into fights . So more or less a realistic look at the afterwork special .
